The Ancient Music Institute of the International Academy of Music introduced in the academic year 2007 2008 the new 19th century guitar program with Maestri Claudio Maccari and Paolo Pugliese.

Musicians wishing to play 19th century repertoire on the guitar confront many issues when attempting to communicate the sense and spirit of the period.

It is very important, for example, to study the vocal and instrumental methods which teach interpretative techniques which are not found in the score.

The comprehension and interpretation of the musical text, strictly connected to the expressive gesture of the various instruments of the 19th century, is essential in determining the best choice of guitar and strings.

The 2 year program in 19th century guitar covers the classic and romantic repertoire from the birth of the 6 string guitar up to the introduction of the Torres guitar.

The course requires 33 hours of private lessons per year taught either weekly or bi-weekly.

Students are also required to attend masterclasses and participate in chamber music ensembles.

Students are required to pass 15 minute entrance audition.

Date of audition is decided by mutual consent.

1. •Analysis of stylistic and interpretive elements of classical and romantic period music
   

2. •Study of 19th century guitar tecnique
   

3. •Criteria and selection of gut strings and their use on the guitar
   

4. •Study of the principle vocal and instrumental treatises and methods
   

5. •Study of the principle guitar treatises and methods
   

6. •Practice of ornamentation and improvisation
   

7. •Practice of playing by memory
   

8. •Study and performance of works for guitar and orchestra or chamber ensemble
   

9. •Study of the construction and evolution of the guitar
   

10. •Final exam-public recital as soloist, with chamber ensemble and with orchestra
